Generates electricity for Florida residents.
WTE helps local governments in Florida dispose of our garbage, safely and responsibly. It extracts the energy value of our municipal solid waste – a domestic “fuel” – and converts into electricity for Florida residents. WTE helps conserve space in Florida’s solid waste landfills, where capacity grows increasingly scarce due to our state’s high water table and growing population. WTE also helps landfills avoid the generation of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
Waste-to-Energy is Critical Infrastructure for Florida
With 9 waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities, Florida relies on WTE more than any other state in the nation for the safe and environmentally responsible disposal of municipal solid waste. WTE is proven and sustainable technology.
Florida’s WTE facilities:
Avoid landfilling more than 6.5 million of tons of solid waste annually.*
Annually reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 15.6 million tons of CO2.
Produce 544 megawatts of electricity—reliably, 24/7/365.
Recycle 212,000 tons of metal a year, enough to build 156,000 cars.
