Why is WTE Critical Infrastructure for Florida?

Waste-to-Energy is Critical Infrastructure for Florida

With 10 waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities, Florida relies on WTE more than any other state in the nation for the safe and environmentally responsible disposal of municipal solid waste. WTE is proven and sustainable technology.

Florida’s WTE facilities:

  • Avoid landfilling more than 6.5 million of tons of solid waste annually.*

  • Annually reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 6.5 million tons of CO2.

  • Produce 544 megawatts of electricity 24/7/365.

  • Recycle 212,000 tons of metal a year, enough to build 156,000 cars.

* Imagine a building with the foundation the size of a football field. It would take a 1,300-story building (more than 12 Empire State buildings) to accommodate 6.5 million tons of solid waste.
