"This 16-foot industrial fan is a powerhouse. Capable of moving up to TK million cubic feet of air every hour. That volume of air primarily is directed at the combustion zone helping keep boiler tempertures above 1,800 degrees. But it also has a secondary effect.
SCENE 3 – OUTSIDE TIPPING FLOOR ENTRANCE

AUDIO:
HOST: All that air being pulled through a waste-to-energy facility creates an “envelope” of negative air pressure around the outside of the facility. That negative air pressure keeps odors contained so they stay trapped inside the building and won’t let them escape.

HOST VO: "Inside a Waste-to-Energy boiler, temperatures reach between 1,800 and 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to achieve what’s called “complete combustion. This process destroys all organic material from your household garbage, making sure it doesn’t enter or harm the environment.

HOST VO: All that heat is used to produce steam, which drives a turbine to generate electricity. In short, waste-to-energy facilities turn garbage that otherwise would go into a landfill into a clean, renewable power source, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. That’s a win for the environment!

HOST VO: Metals don’t burn, waste-to-energy facilities are built to recover them Powerful magnets separate metals from the ash so they can be recycled and reused. In fact, Florida’s nine waste-to-energy facilities recycle over 200,000 tons of metal each year, enough to build more than 150,000 cars.

Food scraps, packaging, old furniture -- you name it – day after day, week after week, month after month. The garbage never stops flowing – almost like a river. But where does that river of garbage actually end up?”

HOST VO: Landfills are giant sites where trash is buried and left to sit, often for decades. It’s not ideal because decaying garbage can create odors, methane and other environmental problems.
SCENE 5: GARBAGE GOES TO A WTE FACILITY

HOST VO: Waste-to-Energy, or WTE, is a cleaner alternative. These facilities extract the value from our garbage by combusting the waste safely and using the heat to make electricity. And they also use extensive pollution control equipment to make sure the process is as environmentally friendly as possible.

HOST VO: "In Florida, MOST of our garbage is ultimately disposed of in sanitary landfills. These sites are carefully engineered with plastic liners to prevent leachate from reaching groundwater and internal gas collection systems to capture methane from decomposing waste. While landfills can have a strong odor, they play a critical role in safely managing our household trash and protecting public health and the environment.
SCENE 3 – GARBAGE’S ULTIMATE DESTINATION – Part 2

HOST VO: But in Florida’s most heavily populated communities, a portion of our garbage is sent to WASTE-TO-ENERGY FACILITIES. Here, it’s burned at extremely high temperatures, ranging between 1,800 and 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. That heat is used to produce high-pressure steam, which powers turbines to generate electricity. Waste-to-Energy facilities are equipped with advanced pollution control systems that reduces their environmental impact.
